New Trust formed to support in 'Hearing Health care''and 'Learning disability' at Puducherry

Prof. N D Rajan, a senior and well known Audiologist and some of his professional colleagues have launched a new Trust 'Bharat Educational & Social Charitable Trust (BEST)' on 24th Jan 2016 at Puducherry.

For the first time in India, this Trust will honour the Audiologist professionals across the nation for their best research papers and innovations in the field.

This Trust will also address the issues relating to 'Learning disability'among the school children.  Studies reveal that nearly 10% of the school going children in India are affected because of 'Learning disability'.  It is a hidden disability and these children can perform better in many other areas, if they are properly guided by the parents and teachers.

Dr N K Majumdar, a well known ENT surgeon of Puchucherry and Dr. R Jagannathan, Former Vice Chancellor of American Medical University, St. Locia, West Indies inaugurated the Trust.  Prime Point Srinivasan released the brochure and delivered a speech on 'Safe use of internet'.

Cyber Society of India bats for Net Neutrality and review of 66A judgement

Cyber Society of India (CySI) organised a Seminar at Dr MGR Janaki College, Chennai on Saturday the 25th April 2015 on the recent trends in Cyber Laws.  Dr P Vanagamudi, Vice Chancellor, Dr Ambedkar Law University, Tamil Nadu inaugurated the Seminar.   G R Swaminathan, Asst. Solicitar General, Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) delivered Key note address.  Many Senior Lawyers, consumer representatives also shared their views.

The Seminar focussed generally on the recent Supreme Court Judgement on 66A of IT Act and the much debated 'Net neutrality'.  Dr Vanagamudi was in support of the Judgement.  Other speakers Shri G R Swaminathan, Shivakumar (Advocate, Bangalore High court), Sujatha (Consumer activisit) and V Balu (Adocate, Madras High Court) felt that the Supreme Court Judgement was erroneous.  They uniformly felt that this judgement may pose risks to women  They wanted the Government to file a review petition before the Supreme Court.  

Dr B Muthukumaran, Technical expert explained the various aspects of Net Neutrality and emphasised that there should not be discrimination while providing internet connectivity to the consumers.   Even Sujatha also felt that there should be net neutrality and it should not be changed.

Be ware and be aware of social media risks

Prime Point Srinivasan addressed the members of Junior Chamber International India - Madras Marina on 5th Apri 2014 on the topic "Be ware and be aware of social media risks".  

During the presentation, Srinivasan emphasised the need for safe use of internet and social media tools.  He quoted some of the interesting case studies.  He  explained some sections of the Information Technology Act 2000, like Section 66A.

During the talk, Srinivasan insisted every one, particularly young girls,  not to share their personal information in the public domain.  He  quoted some of the cases in which  the young girls were victimised because of their casual approach.  He emphasised the need for using strong passwords and maintaining the secrecy of such passwords.

Srinivasan quoted the examples of 'confession pages' that are popular among students.  Some of the students without knowing the consequences were maligning others, he said.  In many cases, the victims had gone to police authorities. Srinivasan said that the offender could be arrested immediately punished upto 3 to 5 years of imprisonment.    

Srinivasan cautioned all the social media users to use the social media properly without infringing on the rights of others. He also insisted not to become addict to the social media.

In the concluding remark, Mr Prabhakaran, President of JCI India Madras Marina suggested that everybody can keep away from social media one day a week, to avoid being addicted.

Increase cyber crime awareness among all stakeholders

Cyber Society of India organsed an one-day workshop on 'Combating Cyber Crimes: Compliance and evidence" on Saturday the 9th November 2013 jointly with Anna University, Chennai at the University auditorium.  Dr Justice Jyothimani (Member Judicial, National Green Tribunal, New Delhi), Shri S S Ramasubbu, (Member of Parliament, Tirunelveli) and Dr C Chellappan, Dean of the University participated and shared their views.  

While inaugurating the workshop Justice Dr Jyothimani insisted on creating cyber crime awareness among the investigating agencies, advocates and judicial officers.  Due to lack of knowledge, many cyber crimes go undetected or unpunished, he said.  He also suggested even an act to be passed in the Parliament.

Shri Ramasubbu MP assured to take up all the suggestions received from Cyber Society of India in the ensuing winter session of the Lok Sabha.

In the day long workshop, many cyber experts, investigators, lawyers, users spoke on the various theme.

Internet is a double edged weapon - Use technology with caution

Tamilnadu and Pucherry wing of Indian speech and hearing Association held their 2nd TAN-ISHACON at Puducherry (Pondicherry) on 13th and 14th October 2012. This Conference was attended by speech language pathologists and audiologists of medical profession.   Though this two-day conference was fully packed with various speeches and presentations on papers relevant to their profession, they had organised a session on 'Cyber Challenges' by Prime Point Srinivasan, President of Cyber Society of India.  Probably. This is the first time, any professional conference in India had included an important topic like cyber safety, to create cyber awareness among their delegates.

In the presentation, Prime Point Srinivasan focussed on the various challenges faced by the internet and mobile users and also explained as to how to manage the challenges.  He compared the internet with a 'double edged weapon' and cautioned them to be more careful while using the technology.

CySI institutes an award for internet banking

A joint programme by Cyber Society of India,
Centre for comparability EU studies and IIT Madras

Computer Security Day is observed worldwide on Nov 30th.  This year Cyber Society of India (Cysi) marked the day with a Workshop on Cyber Security at Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences IIT, Madras on  02-Dec-2011, thanks to the sponsorship and patronage received from the Humanities and Social Science (HSS) Dept of IIT and Centre for Comparitive European Union Studies.

The meeting commenced with a Welcome Address by Shri K Srinivasan, President of CySI.  In his address, he dwelt briefly on the activities of CySI especially on its commitment to create awareness on the threats and vulnerabilities of an e-transaction and the use of ATMs and Internet Banking.  He announced institution of an award for the best bank with the most secure and user-friendly Internet Banking features.  Selection criteria,  the committee of jury and other related procedural issues are being addressed, he said.

Shri V Rajendran, Senior Vice President announced the purpose of the Meeting and introduced the distinguished panel of speakers describing their individual capabilities and talents.

Dr C Pandurangan a senior Professor of IIT Madras and Head Indian Statistical Institute, setting the tone for the workshop emphasized the importance of PIN and the password in ATM and Internet Banking transaction. He added that security is not the responsibility nor the domain of a single person or one entity but the collective task of the regulators, users and the service providers. 

Inaugurating the workshop, Smt Sonal V Misra, I.P.S. Supdt of Police, CB-CID Chennai  spoke on the global scenario on cyber crimes, especially on the dangerous trend of some economies which mainly thrive on fraudulent money. She said the public needed safety and justice from the state, which mainly consists of the police, the prosecution and the judiciary adding that what is needed is certainty of punishment and without much delay, admitting that it is a long way to go in India to ensure speedier justice, a tech-savvy administration, a deterrent  punishment system and above all, a computer-literate net-savvy users at the grass-roots level.

Key note address was delivered by Shri M Ramkumar General Manager Canara Bank  He spoke about the responsibilities of banks and public sector banks in particular to ensure customer focused and customer-centric service and use IT as an enabler in all electronic delivery channels .  He added that more initiatives like introduction of a 2-factor authentication in the form of One Time Password for Internet Banking transaction, more secure ATMs with CCTV enabled are all being considered.

After the Tea Break, there were three thematic sessions, the first one on Network Security  by Dr. B. Muthukumaran, Country Head, Secure IQ.  He spoke about bots  and compromised networks and the threats posed by them.  Shri S.N. Ravichandran, CEO Nilagiri Chemicals, Coimbatore spoke about the ills of social networking sites like Facebook and cautioned against posting personal information in it.  Shri S. Balu, Addl Supdt of Police (Retd) T.N Police presented the legal provisions highlighting the strength of I.T. Act 2000 and ITAA 2008.

There was a very lively and extremely interactive session with participants posing questions on a variety of topics like the strength of ISO 27001 standards, the level of security in a Card transactions, the legal position in the event of loss in an ATM or other card transaction etc, all of which were aptly answered by the panelists on the dais.

The meeting concluded with vote of thanks by Shri V Kapaleeswaran, Life Member of CySI followed by lunch.
